Safari was an Adult Female in the Rugendo Family - and one of the five victims of the massacre in July 2007. She was quite an aggressive gorilla towards us, the Rangers - but this is because she was defending her children, Bavukahe, Ndeze and Kongomani. She would often cry out in a high pitch when we approached.
Safari became known to the world when she gave birth to Ndeze in February 2007.
Ndeze is now one of two mountain gorilla orphans in Congo.
May Safari Rest In Peace.
Safari is buried with other gorillas at Rumangabo, in Virunga National Park.
